A Farmer and Three Sons

Once upon a time, there was an old farmer in a village and he had three sons. They used to quarrel with each other.

After that, he said to his first son, “Can you break these sticks?” The first son tried to break the bundle. But he could not break the bundle.

Then it was the turn of the second son. He thought that he would be able to break the bundle easily. He tried his best for a few minutes to break the bundle of sticks. But it was not so easy to break the bundle so he failed.

Then, the third son also tried to break the bundle and he failed too.

Now the old farmer asked them to unite the bundle and told his sons to take sticks one by one and also asked to break them. Each of the sons took one stick and they broke them easily.

The old farmer then smiled at his sons and said to them, “My sons do you understand what I want to say? It is always easy to break the sticks one by one, but when they are bundled together, it is not so easy to break them.”

“So listen, my sons, I have become old and I may have to respond to heaven’s call any time. But I am worried about your relationship. You see from this test, if you live together nobody can harm you or if you are separate, anybody can harm you.”
